One year ago next Tuesday, Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the Jersey Shore affecting millions of people in different ways. Some have recovered, but many more have endured a long and confusing year filled with anxiety and uncertainty. Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint and there is still a long way to go. We’ve been hard at work, and invite you to join us by telling your story, attending an event, or volunteering. One year after Hurricane Sandy, millions of aid dollars have been given to New York City but our communities continue to feel the devastation, hunger, homelessness, and displacement. Our new mayor has a unique opportunity to turn this tide and create a more equal city!
Join the Alliance for a Just Rebuilding, 350.org, and allies from across the 5 boroughs in a rally marking the one-year anniversary of Sandy. Join the growing movement for a better rebuilding and stand up for stronger communities for all!

NEXT WEEK:
Join Rebuild By Design to hear proposals from the 10 design teams for project ideas across New York and New Jersey. These proposals follow three months of in depth analysis and public outreach, which Occupy Sandy helped to facilitate. This will lead up to a selection of projects each team will pursue in the design phase - the next and final portion of the competition.
Sandy One Year Later Conference
On Oct. 29, 2013, Join NJ Future and other stakeholders at Monmouth University in W. Long Branch for a day-long conference focused on the Sandy recovery process. Distinguished speakers, including former governors James Florio, Christine Todd Whitman and retired U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, will highlight the economic and planning impacts of Sandy and of potential future storms, and will discuss things New Jersey and its municipalities need to be doing in order to be better prepared for the next severe weather event. Occupy Sandy New Jersey Organizer Alyssa Durnein will be a part of the panel. There is no charge to attend, but because space is limited, registration is required. More information and registration.
Looking Back/Looking Forward: Life after Hurricane Sandy

Join us for Stoop Series at Bric House. We’ll gather to share stories in our own words of how Hurricane Sandy has impacted our communities while exploring the ways that art and media offer a form of reflection and healing, and a powerful means of imagining a different future.
The event will feature Sandy Storyline, a participatory documentary project that is collecting and sharing stories of the impact of Sandy. Sandy Storyline features audio, video, photography, and text stories – contributed by residents and citizen journalists – all collected online and shared through web documentary and interactive exhibitions.
We welcome you to join us before the storytelling event for a free community writing workshop with the NY Writers Coalition at 6pm. A lot has happened this past year. Let's put pen to paper and see what comes out. All levels of experience are welcome. Writing supplies and writing prompts will be provided, so just bring yourself. Sandy, One Year Later: Sharing and Preserving Brooklyn's Stories
Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
This program seeks to preserve and document the unique experiences of those whose daily lives continue to be impacted in the aftermath of Sandy. Our panel will include a homeowner (Andrea Hodge, Canarsie), NYCHA resident (Rasheed Johnson, a teen living in the Red Hook Houses), business owner (Michael "Buzzy" O'Keeffe from The River Cafe in DUMBO), and one of Coney Island’s first responders, all of whom continue to work to help their communities return to a “new normal” post Sandy. Also participating is Sandy Storyline, an organization that has gathered audio, video, photography, and text from residents and citizen journalists to document the storm and its aftermath, with the goal of advocating for a more just and sustainable future. Sady Sullivan, BHS Director of Oral History, will moderate. RSVP
